The Good Fats

The third element of our nutrition concepts is the presence of good fats in foods.

Most diet programs suggest limiting calories or counting fat grams.

There is a Better Way

A better and more practical solution is to watch the percentage of fat in the foods you purchase. No more than 20% of your total caloric intake should come from fat.

Caution: Don’t rely on advertised percentages when determining the percentage of fat in foods. Labels that boast “98% fat free” or “50% less fat” are based on volume. If you put a drop of oil in a glass of water you can say it is 99% fat free but in reality, based on calories, it is 100% fat.

How do I Determine Fat Content?

Follow the example provided below to calculate fat content when the label is deceiving. The beauty of this plan is that if all your purchases are in line with the 20% rule, then you can eat any food in your house without worrying about calculating the fat.

Lots of your groceries such as fruit, vegetables and meat do not have labels so here is a chart which will help you with these purchases.
